Polish NGOs and MEPs call on new Polish government to stop sending migrants back to Belarus

11/01/24 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 11 January, a group of 101 NGOs and 550 Polish activists, artists and academics called on the Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, to put an end to the previous government’s practice of sending back migrants who had crossed the border irregularly from Belarus, according to Notes from Poland; practices described as “pushbacks” and “flagrant violations” of human rights. French politician Damien Carême (Greens/EFA) also visited the border on 9 and 10 January, where thousands of instrumentalised migrants had arrived by the end of 2021. “Nearly 30 people are thought to have died since 2021in the forest in eastern Poland, he says in a press release, “200 are still missing. And in 2024, the situation remains worrying”. Despite this, the Darmanin Law in France and the agreement on the ‘Pact on Migration and Asylum’ allow illegal practices”.
