European Commission, 26 Member States and wind energy industry sign ‘European Wind Charter

In the margins of the Energy Council on Tuesday 19 December (see EUROPE 13317/1), the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, 26 European energy ministers and representatives of the EU’s wind energy sector agreed on a European Wind Charter, as presented in the European Wind Power Action Plan (see EUROPE 13278/5).

We want European manufacturers to remain leaders on the EU market and to be competitive at global level. We want the wind power industry to contribute to the transition to clean energy and create hundreds of thousands of high-quality jobs”, said Kadri Simson at the signing of the charter.

In addition to the Member States (all except Hungary), over 300 companies in the wind energy sector have expressed their support for the charter. Among other things, these players are committed to “ensuring a sufficient, robust and predictable pipeline for the deployment of wind energy, including through updated national energy and climate plans coherent with the more ambitious Fit for 55 renewable energy targets, faster and more predictable permitting”.

Twenty-one Member States have also voluntarily committed to increasing wind energy production capacity over the next three years.
