28/11/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 28 November, the NGOs Compassion in World Farming and Eurogroup for Animals published an alarming report on farm animal transport conditions in Europe, ahead of the European Commission’s adoption of a proposal in this area (see EUROPE 13299/8) on 6 December. The report analyses “unpublished” EU data and condemns the shortcomings of official registers, which “underestimate the true horror of this trade”. The report shows that, every year, 370,000 unweaned calves are separated from their mothers, 300,000 lambs undergo long journeys without being adequately fed, and thousands of sheep and cattle are exported to destinations such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia on journeys lasting up to 3 weeks.
