30/10/23 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 27 October, the Council of the European Union announced that the European Council, in accordance with Article 283(2) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU, had formalised by written procedure the appointment of Piero Cipollone as a member of the European Central Bank (ECB) Executive Board on 17 October. From 1 November, the Italian will replace his compatriot Fabio Panetta on the ECB’s Executive Board. The European Council’s decision follows a recommendation by the EU Council on 19 September 2023 and was supported by the ECB Governing Council on 27 September (see EUROPE 13259/20) and then by the European Parliament on 17 October (see EUROPE 13273/26 , 13267/7). Fabio Panetta will become Governor of the Bank of Italy (see EUROPE 13239/18) and will chair the Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures of the Bank for International Settlements (see EUROPE 13248/31).
