EU concerned about irregularities observed during Mozambican municipal elections

30/10/23 (Agence Europe)On Saturday 28 October, the European Union noted “with concern” post-election reports of “irregularities” in the recent municipal elections in Mozambique and deplored the deaths of two people during demonstrations contesting the election results, according to a statement by the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS). It is calling on the Mozambican authorities to respond to these reports in order to ensure a “satisfactory and peaceful” outcome to the electoral process. According to results confirmed by the country’s electoral commission on Thursday 26 October, the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) party, which has been in power since the 1992 civil war, won 64 of the 65 municipalities where elections were held. The result was contested by the Mozambique National Resistance (Renamo) party, which claimed victory in the capital Maputo. (MB)
