EU-Canada summit will take place on 23 and 24 November

The Canadian President, Justin Trudeau, will welcome the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to St. John’s on Thursday 23 and Friday 24 November for an EU-Canada summit.

On this occasion, the leaders are expected to reaffirm their joint support for Ukraine and take stock of the results of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the EU-Canada Strategic Partnership on key raw materials (see EUROPE 12745/18).

The CETA has been partially in place since September 2017 and has been officially ratified by 16 out of 27 Member States (see EUROPE 13076/32). Last year, the Commission published a report on the first five years of the agreement and its impact at the European level (see EUROPE 13026/12).

The summit should also be an opportunity for the two parties to “step up work to address the triple global crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, and to promote a net-zero global economy by 2050”. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
