The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, announced, on Saturday 28 October, during his visit to Ghana, the delivery of 105 armoured vehicles as part of the €20 million ‘European Peace Facility’ support for the country’s armed forces.
“Further equipment will also be delivered in the future: aerial surveillance, electronic warfare [systems] and river crafts”, he announced at a press conference with Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul.
“We are confident that this support will benefit not only Ghana but the entire sub-region [of the Gulf of Guinea] as well”, which is plagued by the spread of insecurity from the Sahel, explained Mr Borrell, adding that the country was a key partner “considering its crucial role in furthering democracy, prosperity and regional stability”.
The High Representative recalled that the fight against terrorism also required the provision of services and the creation of jobs, and investment in socio-economic inclusion, particularly in northern Ghana. The EU will therefore continue its wide-ranging cooperation on these priorities and support Ghana in promoting sustainable growth, digital and green transition, climate resilience and health and education systems, he added.
