30/08/2023 (Agence Europe) – The President of the Eurogroup, Paschal Donohoe, announced on Wednesday 30 August that Italy’s Piero Cipollone, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Italy, was the only candidate put forward to replace his compatriot Fabio Panetta on the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB) from 1 November, the date on which Panetta will become Governor of the Bank of Italy, replacing Ignazio Visco. The Eurogroup will discuss this bid at its next meeting on Friday 15 September in Santiago de Compostela. The Council of the EU should then recommend to the European Council, by a reinforced qualified majority (fifteen countries representing 65% of the Eurozone population) of the Eurozone countries, to appoint Mr Cipollone, after consulting the ECB and the European Parliament.
