30/08/23 (Agence Europe) – Expressing “serious concern” regarding the ongoing deadly conflict and human rights violations in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, the EU is calling on all parties to engage in dialogue. “Large-scale detentions, notably since the proclamation of a state of emergency, are being reported. The EU joins the African Union, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission in calling for the protection of civilians, for a cessation of hostilities and for a dialogue between the parties”, stressed the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in a statement issued on behalf of the EU27 on the evening of Tuesday 29 August. The EU says it is ready to support any process leading to dialogue, reconciliation and peace through a political settlement. (AN)
