renewable-friendly” Member States propose measures to European Commission for rapid expansion of renewable energies

In a joint statement to the European Commission published on Sunday 22 October, the “Friends of Renewables” group - comprising Austria, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands and Portugal - called for the expansion of renewable energies to be speeded up and for the necessary framework conditions to be created.

In addition to the renewable energy target(see EUROPE 13267/30), this group of Member States has therefore proposed a set of measures “that should be the cornerstone of our energy policy priorities and that of the next European Commission”.

They stress the urgent need for Europe to switch to renewable energy sources in order to combat climate change, reduce energy dependency on non-renewable sources and stimulate the economy.

In particular, they welcome the Commission’s initiative to set up an action plan for the wind energy sector (see EUROPE 13275/5), but consider that in addition to this plan, an “accelerator” is needed for other forms of renewable energy, as well as an infrastructure to integrate renewable energies into the energy system.
