19/07/23 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 19 July, the European Commission declared that Community rules on the control of bovine tuberculosis on farms must be respected. The European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee has raised the issue, following political differences in Spain over the possibility of reviewing measures to eradicate this type of zoonosis. The relaxation of the rules on combating bovine tuberculosis was in fact a promise made by the Spanish VOX party to farmers in Castilla y León. The Commission ensures compliance with European rules and “that’s what we did in this Spanish case”, said its representative. The Commission welcomed the action taken by Spain to ensure compliance with EU rules. European legislation on bovine tuberculosis, which dates back to 1977, was revised in 2015 and 2020. (LC)
