On Wednesday 26 July, the Spanish Presidency of the EU Council will submit to the Member States’ ambassadors to the EU (Coreper) the same compromise proposal on the composition of the European Parliament for the 2024-2029 term as that unveiled on Friday 14 July (see EUROPE 13223/5).
This was announced to the Member States at the Coreper meeting on Wednesday 19 July.
An agreement on this proposal seems possible, which is why the Spanish authorities want to give the Member States more time in the hope of maturing the dossier.
Based on the European Parliament’s initial proposal for a 716-seat chamber (see EUROPE 13202/11), the Spanish proposal suggests giving two more seats to France (81 seats instead of 79) as well as one more seat to Belgium (22 seats instead of 21) and Poland (53 instead of 52), bringing the Parliament’s chamber to 720 seats.
