Two years after the first five European missions (EU missions) were set up, the European Commission adopted, on Wednesday 19 July, an assessment of the progress made by these new missions. The Commission defines these missions, established under Horizon Europe, as an innovative approach to tackling societal challenges based on citizen participation (see EUROPE 12969/5).
On this occasion, the Commission announced that it was initiating a preparatory phase for a new mission linked to the ‘New European Bauhaus’, which will focus in particular on the social appropriation of green solutions and encouraging the changes in behaviour needed to achieve the goals of the ‘Green Deal’.
In its communication, the Commission considers that the missions are well on the way to achieving their goals by 2030 in areas such as adapting to climate change, combating cancer, cleaning up marine and freshwater ecosystems, making cities climate neutral and ensuring healthy soils.
The Commission is proposing to devote 11% of the budget of the second pillar of Horizon Europe to European missions in the final part of the programme, compared with 10% at present.
The Commission is also committed to making the missions more effective, for example by strengthening the dialogue on mission governance or through initiatives to increase participation in the missions.
