Joint purchase of gas, European Commission launches a second call

On Monday 26 June, the European Commission launched a second call for EU companies to register their gas purchasing requirements via the AggregateEU mechanism, the platform dedicated to the joint purchase of gas on the international market.

This second exercise builds on a successful first tender (see EUROPE 13179/4), in which nearly 11 billion cubic metres of aggregated European gas demand was bid for by reliable suppliers.

In this second round, European companies have from 26 June to 3 July to respond to the call for aggregated gas demand. Collective demand will then be put out to tender on the world market from 7 to 10 July, so that international suppliers can submit their bids to supply European customers. Potential buyers will be able to submit their applications for gas to be delivered between August 2023 and March 2025, a longer period than in the first round.

Demand aggregation and gas group purchasing are flagship initiatives of the EU Energy Platform, which was created to stimulate the diversification of European gas supplies following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the EU’s collective decision to end its dependence on Russian fossil fuel imports.
