Agreement with European Parliament on alternative fuels in aviation adopted at Council of the EU

21/06/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 16 June, the Member States’ ambassadors to the EU (Coreper) approved the provisional agreement reached at the end of April with the European Parliament on the ‘ReFuelEU Aviation’ regulation on sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), which is part of the Green Deal (see EUROPE 13203/33). This regulation sets out a roadmap for the deployment of sustainable fuels in aviation to reduce the sector’s CO2 emissions by replacing kerosene with sustainable fuels. The co-legislators have decided that SAFs include synthetic fuels, recycled carbon-based fuels and biofuels. They have also determined SAF and electro-fuel quotas for 2050, with intermediate quotas.
