21/06/2023 (Agence Europe) – On 16 June, Malaysia officially abolished the law that made the death penalty automatic for eleven serious crimes. “The European Union commends Malaysia for passing the Abolition of the Mandatory Death Penalty Bill and Revision of Sentence of Death and Imprisonment for Natural Life”, said European External Action Service (EEAS) spokesperson Nabila Massrali on Wednesday 21 June. She also issued a reminder that the EU is firmly opposed to the death penalty in all circumstances. With the adoption of these two texts, judges will still be able to decide to impose the death penalty in certain exceptional cases. (LM)
