Average CO2 emissions from new cars registered in Europe fell in 2022, according to EEA

The European Environment Agency (EEA) has announced that average CO2 emissions from new cars registered in Europe fell in 2022, according to provisional data published on Tuesday 20 June. Emissions are down 27% compared to 2019, thanks to the stricter emissions targets that came into force in 2020.

According to the EEA, the main reason for this drop is the recent increase in the number of electric and hybrid cars registered, representing 23% of the new car market compared to 19% in 2021, with 13.4% being fully electric.

In 2022, 9.4 million new passenger cars were registered in the EU, Iceland and Norway. Provisional data show that their average CO2 emissions in laboratory tests were 108.2 grams of CO2 per kilometre, 5.2% lower than the 2021 average of 114.1 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

Emissions from vans also fell by an average of 9% compared with 2019. The average CO2 emissions of the 1 million new vans registered in the EU, Iceland and Norway in 2022 were 185.3 grams of CO2 per kilometre, 4.1% lower than in 2021. The market share of fully electric vans rose from 3.4% in 2021 to 6% in 2022.
