Energy and climate crises top agenda of European mayors, according to Eurocities

The energy crisis has emerged as the main challenge for 28.57% of the mayors of major European cities in 2022. It is followed by climate change and economic recovery, according to the survey published on Monday 12 June by Eurocities, a network of major European cities.

The conclusions of the Eurocities Pulse Survey show that, in the face of rising energy prices, local councillors have speeded up energy transition measures, encouraged the local supply of renewable energies and taken measures to protect vulnerable populations.

In addition, climate change was described as a climate crisis by “many mayors” and was mentioned by 26.37% of them as one of the top three challenges in 2022. The extreme weather conditions have made this problem even more urgent.

In fact, by 2023, climate action will be the top priority for more than half of mayors, highlighting the commitment of cities to achieving climate neutrality. It will result in the implementation of concrete measures such as the development of low-emission zones, environmental protection and the promotion of the circular economy.

The survey, which gathered 92 responses from municipal leaders in Eurocities’ 210 member cities, provides an overview of the major urban trends, challenges and priorities facing mayors.
