08/06/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 8 June, the European Commission announced that it had registered Germany’s ‘Nordhessische Ahle Wurscht/Nordhessische Ahle Worscht’ in the Community register of protected geographical indications (PGIs). This PGI designates a pure pork dry sausage, which is air-dried and possibly smoked, produced in the North Hesse region. The seasoning is essentially based on pepper and nutmeg, with local nuances added by caraway, mustard seeds and garlic. “The top reputation enjoyed by the product is due to the long tradition associated with it, its particular flavour, as well as the trend towards enhancing regional character and refocusing on traditional products”, according to a press release from the European Commission. This new name will be added to the list of 1,630 agricultural products that are already protected at EU level. (LC)
