EU calls on Iran to honour its nuclear commitments

On Wednesday 7 June, the European Union called on Iran to honour its nuclear commitments.

At the IAEA Board of Governors meeting, the EU representative made it clear that the EU expected Iran to “address without further delay the outstanding safeguards issues related to the absence of undeclared nuclear activities”.

The EU warned that “it is essential and urgent that Iran take substantial and rapid measures to comply with its commitments and obligations in terms of guarantees” (that its nuclear programme is peaceful).

The representative added that they expected rapid and tangible progress to be made as soon as possible and that they would consider further measures accordingly.

Among other things, the EU is asking the Iranian government to be more transparent about activities at the Turquzabad and Varamin sites, in particular by informing the Agency of the current location of nuclear materials and/or contaminated equipment.

In addition, the EU is awaiting answers on the discrepancy between the quantity of nuclear material verified by the Agency at the Uranium Conversion Facility and originating from the Jaber Ibn Hayan Multipurpose Laboratory and the quantity declared by Iran.

The EU is also calling on Iran to implement the amended Code 3.1 on the early declaration of new nuclear facilities.

In addition, the installation of monitoring and control equipment needs to be completed, and there are problems with access to data records and gaps in records.
