01/06/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 31 May, the European Commission registered a European citizens’ initiative entitled “Effective implementation of the concept of judicial precedent in EU countries”. The organisers of this initiative are calling on the Commission to put in place a mechanism guaranteeing the mutual recognition of final judicial decisions taken by the courts of other Member States, in similar or identical cases involving EU law and with cross-border implications. They also request the possibility of invoking national judicial precedents established by the courts of the country concerned. The registration of this initiative means that it is legally admissible, but does not prejudge the Commission’s legal and political conclusions on this proposal. The organisers now have six months to start collecting signatures and collect one million declarations of support from at least seven Member States within a year. (NP)
