EU Member States agree on EU Council recommendation on combating antimicrobial resistance

On Wednesday 31 May, the Committee of Member States’ Representatives to the EU (Coreper) approved the Swedish Presidency of the EU Council’s compromise on the EU Council recommendation on stepping up EU action against antimicrobial resistance.

This recommendation, which is part of the package of proposals on pharmaceutical legislation, will be formally adopted by the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council (EPSCO) on 13 June.

On 26 April, the Commission submitted to the Council the proposal for a Council recommendation on combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The proposal includes a series of actions aimed at: - strengthening national action plans against antimicrobial resistance; - strengthening the surveillance and monitoring of antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial consumption; - strengthening infection prevention and control; - recommending targets for antimicrobial resistance in human health; - encouraging research and development; - increasing cooperation and strengthening actions at global level (see EUROPE 13170/2).

In addition, the EPSCO Council on 13 June will hold a debate on ‘strengthening the pharmaceutical ecosystem in support of competitiveness and equitable access to medicines’, according to a note from the Swedish Presidency obtained by EUROPE (https://aeur.eu/f/768 ).
