“We, the undersigned Members of the United States Congress and Members of the European Parliament, write to urge you to address our profound concern”.
In this way, more than 130 elected representatives of the American Congress and the European Parliament called on Tuesday 23 May for the withdrawal of the nomination of Sultan Al-Jaber, head of an oil company, to chair the next Conference of the Parties on climate (COP28) in Dubai (United Arab Emirates).
“We urge you to engage in diplomatic efforts to secure the withdrawal of the President-designate from COP28 and to take immediate steps to limit the influence of polluting industries, particularly major fossil fuel industry players”, they write in the letter addressed to US President Joe Biden, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UN Climate Executive Secretary Simon Stiell.
The letter was signed by 99 MEPs from the Greens/EFA group – who had already requested it in February 2023 (see EUROPE 13125/23) – as well as The Left and S&D. Among them, Manon Aubry (The Left, French), who said on her Twitter account on 24 May: “The fossil fuel industries are positioning themselves to save their profits at the risk of our lives”.
