The second call for expressions of interest of the Urban Transition Mission (UTM) of ‘Mission Innovation’ (MI) – a global clean energy initiative of 23 countries and the European Commission – opened on Tuesday 23 May.
The call, which is open to cities worldwide, aims to expand the current UTM set of 48 cities, selected in the first call for expressions of interest and announced at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt), to up to 300 cities. The 250 new pioneer cities selected under the second call for expressions of interest are expected to be announced at COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Cities that are signatories to the Global Covenant of Mayors, with a population of at least 50,000 and a comprehensive climate and energy plan, are eligible. To express their willingness to participate, they must complete a short questionnaire and submit it by 21 August 2023.
Selected cities will be supported to advance their climate and energy action planning and to implement systemic and innovative approaches to 'net-zero', resilient and people-centred transitions.
