22/05/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission announced on Monday 22 May that it had registered two new protected designations of origin (PDOs) in the Community register of quality products. ‘Nueces de Nerpio’, from Spain, are the dried nuts obtained from walnut trees of the autochthonous Nerpio variety, grown in the Taibilla valley basin, in the southern part of the Sierra de Segura. The other PDO is Swedish: the ‘Grebbestadostron’, an Atlantic oyster that grows on natural oyster beds in the northern and southern Grebbestad archipelago. Because the water in the production area is cold, relatively low in nutrients and has a low salt content, the ‘Grebbestadostron’ oyster grows slowly. It takes three to five years before it reaches the minimum regulatory harvest size. (LC)
