22/05/2023 (Agence Europe) – In response to the devastating floods in Emilia-Romagna (north-eastern Italy), the EU has provided the Italian civil protection authorities with detailed satellite maps of the affected areas through its Copernicus programme, the European Commission announced on Saturday 20 May. The floods, caused by torrential rains, killed 14 people and displaced over 36,000. On his Twitter account, the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, said he was “saddened by the tragic news from Italy” and expressed his solidarity with the victims. Indicating that “Copernicus services have been supporting the efforts of the Italian authorities”, he said the EU was ready to help further, if necessary. (AN)
