The European Parliament’s Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL) adopted a resolution by 36 votes to 3 with 4 abstentions, on Monday 8 May in Strasbourg, calling on the European Commission to propose a directive on quality traineeships in the EU.
Traineeships in the EU should ensure decent living standards by offering adequate remuneration and be more accessible, stressed MEPs in approving the report by Monica Semedo (Renew Europe, Luxembourger).
The requested directive on traineeships should ensure “minimum quality standards for trainees, including rules on the duration of traineeships, remuneration and access to social protection in accordance with national law and practices”.
This would cover a range of traineeships, including “so-called open labour market traineeships and those that are a mandatory part of professional training”, the adopted text states.
Member States should set the level of remuneration so as to cover at least the cost of material needs such as “food, clothing, housing and transport, as well as taking into account the cost of living”.
In addition, high quality traineeships should be accessible to all, in particular to trainees with disabilities and those from vulnerable backgrounds.
