The European Commission launched on 19 April a portal to advance the EU’s mission on adaptation to climate change (see EUROPE 13033/28).
The portal provides information on the latter and developments in its implementation, supported in particular by the regional and local authorities involved. The Executive Vice-President responsible for the ‘European Green Deal’, Frans Timmermans, defines it in the Commission’s press release as a ‘new knowledge centre on climate adaptation’.
In addition, the Regional Adaptation Support Tool (RAST), which will soon be available on the portal, will provide authorities with practical information at each stage of the development of their climate change adaptation plans.
In the context of increasing climate risks in Europe, the Adaptation Dashboard provides easy access to relevant data that can help understand the specific vulnerabilities and risks faced by regional and local authorities.
The portal also links to an online space on adaptation practices, which is accessible to the signatories of the charter, friends of the mission and national authorities competent in the field. Regional and local authorities can receive technical assistance to advance and finance their climate adaptation planning processes, identify and finance demonstration projects, and mobilise and engage citizens and stakeholders in climate adaptation.
The mission portal is hosted by the European Climate Adaptation Platform (Climate-ADAPT) and was developed by the European Commission, the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the Mission Implementation Platform (MIP4Adapt) team. The mission on adaptation aims to help regions and communities accelerate their green transition by 2030.
On 7 March 2023, the European Commission announced that 301 authorities had signed the Mission Charter. (Original version in French by Nithya Paquiry)
