EU Member States hope to finalise their position on geographical indications on 8 May

28/04/2023 (Agence Europe) – The experts of the Special Committee on Agriculture (SCA) hope to be able to endorse their position on the proposal on geographical indications (GIs) for agricultural products on Monday 8 May. To this end, the Swedish Presidency of the EU Council has prepared an amended version of the text of the Regulation originally proposed by the Commission on GIs. This text should serve as the EU Council’s negotiating position for the upcoming trilogues with the European Parliament. The report by Paolo de Castro (S&D, Italian) was recently adopted in the European Parliament committee (see EUROPE 13166/17). The plenary vote is scheduled for 31 May. The EU Council and European Parliament hope to start discussions on the text by June, with a view to reaching a final agreement under the Spanish Presidency of the EU Council in the second half of 2023.
