The European Commission announced on Tuesday 18 April that it has launched a series of unannounced inspections at the premises of companies in the fashion sector in several Member States. The Commission acted on suspicion of violations of EU competition rules prohibiting cartels and restrictive business practices.
These operations are separate from the inspections in June 2021 and May 2022 (see EUROPE 12955/30).
These inspections were carried out by Commission officials, accompanied by representatives of the national competition authorities of the Member States concerned.
In addition, some companies in the sector have been sent formal requests for information.
The Commission stresses that these inspections do not prejudge the culpability of the companies.
The institution recalls the existence of its leniency programme, which allows for a reduction in sanctions or even immunity for firms reporting anti-competitive practices. At the individual level, the Commission also highlights the existence of its whistleblower tool, which allows for anonymous reporting of anti-competitive practices.
