Josep Borrell condemns attack on EU ambassador in Khartoum

Brussels, 18/04/2023 (Agence Europe)The EU ambassador to Sudan, Irishman Aidan O’Hara, was “attacked in his residence”, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, announced on Twitter on the evening of Monday 17 April. He condemned the attack, which had taken place a few hours earlier in Khartoum in the midst of renewed fighting between the Sudanese regular army and the Rapid Support Forces (see EUROPE 13163/27). “This constitutes a gross violation of the Vienna Convention. Security of diplomatic premises and staff is a primary responsibility of Sudanese authorities and an obligation under international law”, said Borrell. A spokeswoman for the European Diplomatic Service told AFP on Monday evening that the ambassador was safe and sound and had been recalled, but the EU delegation had not been evacuated. (AN)
