18/04/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 18 April, the European Commission registered a European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) entitled “Connecting all European capitals and people through a high-speed train network”. The organisers of the initiative are calling on the Commission to propose a legally binding act to connect all European capitals by high-speed railway lines, by linking existing high-speed rail networks and building high-speed lines where these do not yet exist. “This is the 100th citizens’ initiative to be registered and it marks an important milestone in political participation”, commented Margrethe Vestager, executive vice-president of the Commission, in the minutes of the College of Commissioners meeting. The organisers can start collecting the necessary one million signatures, which will oblige the Commission to act. (AD)
