European Commission increases funding for innovation in civil security and renewable energy

On Friday 31 March, the European Commission announced an increase in European funding for research and innovation (R&I) in the civil security and renewable energy sectors.

On the same day, it adopted an amendment to the Horizon Europe main work programme for 2023 and 2024 which was adopted on 6 December (see EUROPE 13078/25).

Firstly, this amendment will see the allocation of an additional €50 million to the main work programme to strengthen European R&I in civil protection.

The additional funding should support R&I activities to improve European crisis preparedness and disaster risk management, combat hate speech and build the resilience of critical infrastructure.

The additional European funding will reach project developers through an increase in existing calls and the introduction of six new themes.

Secondly, an additional €14 million in 2023 will support investments in digital solutions to identify synergies in international renewable energy value chains.

Finally, the call for the creation of ‘regional innovation valleys’ (see EUROPE 13151/37) has been brought forward to 2023. It will open on 17 May and close on 17 October 2023.
