03/04/23 (Agence Europe) – In a report published on 31 March, the NGO coalition CAN Europe highlights the increase in fossil fuel subsidies in recent years, specifically in 2021, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and then the war in Ukraine. In the context of the energy crisis, many national governments have introduced tax breaks and subsidies to protect businesses and households from rising energy prices. This additional expenditure amounts to $350 billion, according to the International Energy Agency. In the report, CAN Europe makes recommendations to end fossil fuel subsidies, including encouraging more transparency in Member States’ National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs), which are due to be updated in 2023-2024.
