The European Commission has launched a twelve-week call for evidence, starting 31 March, for an impact assessment to feed into its assessment of an appropriate climate target for 2040.
And for good reason, Article 4 of the European Climate Law (see EUROPE 12750/27) calls on the Commission to present a proposal setting an interim EU target to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and to publish a report on the indicative GHG4 budget for the period 2030-2050.
The public consultation, which closes on 23 June, is gathering both evidence and feedback to analyse the sectoral transformations, challenges and opportunities that the EU’s climate ambitions will present for all sectors of the economy. Participants - from the general public as well as from stakeholders involved in or likely to be affected by the transition - are invited to respond to a questionnaire in all 24 official EU languages. Position papers, guidance notes or roadmaps can be added to support these assessments.
The Commission will present its legislative proposal within 6 months of the comprehensive review under the Paris Agreement in November 2023.
