21/03/2023 (Agence Europe) – Water as a strategic issue for the EU and the world will appear in the conclusions of the European Council, which will meet in Brussels on 23 and 24 March—right when the United Nations Water Conference will be taking place in New York (22–24 March). The topic was added to the ‘External Relations’ section of the draft conclusions dated 20 March that were obtained by EUROPE. Leaders are expected to welcome this UN conference and its action agenda. Furthermore, they are expected to “[acknowledge] the need for enhanced EU and global action on water” and stress “the importance of a strategic EU approach to water security”. The 2023 “United Nations Conference on the Midterm Comprehensive Review of the Implementation of the Objectives of the International Decade for Action, ‘Water for Sustainable Development’, 2018–2028” will be organised by Tajikistan and the Netherlands.
