16/03/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament has condemned, in the strongest possible terms, the poisoning of women and girls with toxic chemicals since November 2022, preventing them from attending school. In the joint resolution adopted by The Left, Greens/EFA, Renew Europe, EPP, S&D and ECR groups (516 votes in favour, 5 against and 14 abstentions), the Parliament called it “an atrocious attempt to silence women and girls”. MEPs demand that those responsible for the poisonings be held accountable. In their view, the UN Human Rights Council should mandate the independent international fact-finding mission to conduct an independent investigation into the poisonings. More broadly, the European Parliament calls on the Iranian authorities to ensure non-discriminatory access to education for girls and to repeal all legislation that discriminates against women and girls.
