Asylum and migration management, work continues in EU Council

The Swedish Presidency of the Council of the EU submitted to the Member States, on Friday 10 February, a new compromise on the Asylum and Migration Management Regulation (ex-Dublin), which this time deals only with the articles relating to the procedures for the relocation by Member States of migrants or asylum seekers to relieve countries under pressure, i.e. articles 57 and 58.

It is also a question of incorporating into the legislative text the reflections of the Member States during the Czech Presidency of the EU Council, for example on the type of documents required and the deadlines for responses. A previous compromise had introduced amendments on Member States’ annual commitments on migration, the principles for the functioning of the solidarity mechanism for countries under pressure and the revised Dublin criteria for determining which Member State is responsible for a request.

On the 'Pact on Migration and Asylum’, the European Council, taking into account the progress made in 2022, invited on 9 February “the co-legislators to continue the work on the Pact on Migration and Asylum in accordance with the common roadmap as well as the work on the revised Schengen Borders Code and the Return Directive”.

The co-legislators confirmed again this week their commitment to start most of the trilogues on the Pact’s legislative texts before the summer.
