The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) notes, in an update of its assessment of the seasonal influenza epidemic in Europe published on Friday 10 February, a decrease in seasonal influenza activity for the fifth week of 2023 (which covers the period from Monday 30 January to Sunday 5 February).
For the European Centre, influenza activity has declined in the European region since week 51 of 2022.
However, the Centre reports a slight increase in positivity in primary care sentinels observed for the fifth week of 2023. According to the ECDC, the increase in this indicator is linked to the circulation of influenza type B virus.
However, the intensity of influenza remains moderate to high in many countries reporting data to the ECDC.
Earlier in the week, in response to high transmission levels of SARS-CoV-2, respiratory syncytial virus and seasonal influenza, the ECDC issued recommendations for nursing homes to maintain and reinforce best practices regarding infection prevention and control (see EUROPE 13116/11).
