On Friday 10 February, the European Commission published the first version of a common EU toolkit for the implementation of the European Digital Identity Wallet (see EUROPE 13095/4). This common toolkit should, among other things, serve as a basis for the design of the future Digital Identity Wallet that the Member States will eventually have to develop.
Developed in collaboration with the Member States, this framework includes requirements and specifications that are will not be mandatory for Member States until the legislative proposal for the future Digital Identity Wallet is adopted.
Inter-institutional negotiations on the subject should be able to start after the March plenary session, when MEPs will be asked to vote on the report by Romana Jerković (S&D, Croatian). The text was approved on 9 February by the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) (see EUROPE 13118/14).
Work is also continuing on pilot projects for the development of Digital Identity Wallets, with €50 million in funding for priority use cases of the wallet, including mobile driving licences, e-health services, payments and education. The first pilot projects should be launched in the first half of 2023. (Original version in French by Thomas Mangin)
