06/02/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, met, on Monday 6 February, with the organisers of the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) ‘Stop Finning - Stop the Trade’. This is the eighth successful ECI to date. The Commission invited the organisers to present their ideas in more detail. The initiative calls on the Commission to propose legal measures to end the trade in shark fins in the EU, including the import, export and transit of fins other than those naturally attached to the animal’s body (see EUROPE 13097/3). The organisers will then present and debate the initiative at a public hearing in the European Parliament. The Commission has until 11 July 2023 to respond to the initiative, describing the measures it intends to take. (LC)
