02/02/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 1 February, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a scientific opinion on low viscosity refined paraffinic waxes derived from petroleum or synthetic hydrocarbons used in food contact materials (FCMs) in response to a request for a safety assessment of these substances (FCM No. 93) submitted by the Dutch Ministry of Health. The EFSA Scientific Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids (CEP) considered that, under the intended and tested conditions of use, FCM No. 93 does not pose a safety concern to the consumer if used at a level that ensures that migration into food does not exceed 5 mg/kg.
