02/02/2023 (Agence Europe) – On World Wetlands Day on Thursday 2 February, the anniversary of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (adopted in 1971), the Greens/EFA in the European Parliament are calling on the EU to do more to restore wetlands. They believe that in the proposed EU regulation on nature restoration, wetlands are only given a secondary role (see EUROPE 13098/3). “The role of peatlands and wetlands in the new European law must be strengthened! Wetlands should once again be able to serve as a carbon and water reservoir as well as protection against flooding”, said German MEP Jutta Paulus. “Without the rewetting and networking of wetlands, the EU will not be able to achieve climate neutrality and stop species extinction”, she said.
