European Pigmeat Reflection Group presents its recommendations

The EU’s agricultural organisations and cooperatives (Copa-Cogeca) welcomed, on Thursday 19 January, the recommendations made by the European Pigmeat Reflection Group, which met seven times between March 2022 and January 2023.

Key recommendations for a more sustainable pigmeat sector include encouraging Member States to use all available Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) tools, such as sector-related interventions (see EUROPE 12949/6).

In terms of environmental challenge, the experts suggest developing a framework for manure management and supporting local biogas solutions based on slurry, residues and waste.

In the area of animal health, effective biosecurity measures and management of wild boar populations can be improved through national action plans and the implementation of all available tools, including under the CAP.

Finally, with regard to animal welfare, the focus is made on maintaining a science-based approach in all regulatory steps and on promoting EU standards, in particular in negotiations on free trade agreements between the EU and third countries.
