EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Brazil

European Parliament calls for prosecution of all those involved in assault on Brazilian institutions

The European Parliament calls for a “prompt and impartial” investigation to prosecute those involved, the instigators and the Brazilian institutions guilty of passivity that contributed to the assault on Brazil’s democratic institutions perpetrated “by supporters of former President Bolsonaro” in early January, in a resolution it adopted on Thursday 19 January (319 votes in favour, 46 against, 74 abstentions).

In this text, prepared solely by the S&D, Renew Europe, Greens/EFA and The Left Groups, MEPs highlight the Brazilian Supreme Court’s decision to approve an investigation into former President Jair Bolsonaro and his contribution to this assault, which is reminiscent of the one on Capitol Hill in Washington in early 2021 after Donald Trump’s defeat in the US presidential elections (see EUROPE 13095/14).

According to Parliament, there is “a connection” between these events, the Capitol events and the arrest of 25 people in Germany at the end of 2022 who were seeking to re-establish the German Reich, events which reflect “a rise in transnational fascism, racism and extremism”.

And MEPs expressed their support for the re-elected Brazilian President, Lula da Silva.
