European Commission provides additional guidance for applying EU Taxonomy

The European Commission adopted, on Thursday 22 December, two further guidance documents addressing frequently asked questions on the interpretation and implementation of the EU Taxonomy. (see EUROPE 13072/21).

According to the European Taxonomy Framework, from 1 January 2023, some 4,000 large companies will be required to report in a way that establishes a common language for ‘sustainable business activities’ for financial market participants and investors.

The Commission’s documents are aimed at these companies and provide them with details of what and how they should report their environmental performance under the taxonomy. The Commission wants to help them prepare for their first mandatory reporting exercise.

The first document focuses on clarifications to frequently asked questions on the technical selection criteria defined in the EU Taxonomy Climate Delegated Act.

The purpose of the second is to provide additional interpretative and implementation guidance to these non-financial companies on reporting under the Disclosures Delegated Act.

Both texts are in the form of answers to the most frequently asked questions.

These two documents are currently adopted as draft Commission communications and will be applicable and valid vis-à-vis third parties after formal adoption, once all languages are available. (Original version in French by Anne Damiani)
