On Wednesday 21 December, the European Commission published the latest monthly report on agri-food trade, which shows that EU agri-food exports and imports increased in September 2022.
EU exports have been on the rise since the beginning of the year, reaching €20.9 billion in that month. The value of EU imports was €15.6 billion, resulting in a positive trade balance for the EU of €5.8 billion.
In value terms, EU agri-food exports jumped by 3.1% compared to August 2022. The increase in exports was largely due to higher volumes of cereal preparations, wine and mixed food preparations being shipped, particularly to the UK.
Overall, the most significant changes were observed in exports to China (+18%), the UK (+7%) and the US (+5%).
In September 2022, EU exports of protein crops and fruit (apples, pears, peaches) to the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region and to sub-Saharan Africa increased significantly, while wheat exports decreased.
