09/12/2022 (Agence Europe) – “The lack of consensus on Romania’s accession to Schengen, due to Austria’s opposition, is deeply unfair to our country and to Romanian citizens”, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis reacted on Thursday 8 December. “Romania deserved to receive a positive vote. This has been confirmed by solid evidence and the results of recent appraisal missions by Member States and the European institutions. A single Member State has chosen to ignore these realities and block European unanimity in a way that is inexplicable and difficult for the whole EU to understand”, he added. “Austria’s regrettable and unjustified attitude risks affecting European unity and cohesion. However, Romania will continue to act responsibly to strengthen the internal security of the EU”. Twenty-six countries supported Romania’s entry into Schengen on 8 December in Brussels (see EUROPE 13080/1). (SP)
