01/12/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 1 December, the European Commission approved Latvia's Territorial Just Transition Plan. Drawing on €192 million from the Just Transition Fund (JTF), the investments will be particularly directed towards the regions of Vidzeme, Latgale, Zemgale and Kurzeme to support them in phasing out the use of peat, a fossil fuel. Latvia also plans to promote their economic diversification by supporting innovative infrastructure for SMEs and investing in renewable energy, in particular solar energy and biomass. Finally, around 1,600 employees in the peat sector will undergo training. (HS)
