21/11/2022 (Agence Europe) – On 9 November, the European Commission adopted its shortlist of candidates to succeed Frenchman Fabrice Leggeri as the executive director of the Frontex agency. When looked at by EUROPE, the list includes the names of the current acting executive director, Aija Kalnaja from Latvia, who has been in the role since 1 July, as well as Terezija Gras from Croatia, who currently sits in the Croatian government, and Hans Leijtens of the Netherlands. The Committee on Civil Liberties of the European Parliament will hear these candidates on 30 November. After have received the opinion of the European Parliament, “the Frontex Management Board will be in a position to appoint the new Executive Director of Frontex before the end of the year”, said the Commission. Fabrice Leggeri was forced to resign after the publication of a highly critical OLAF report on the internal mismanagement of incidents that involved violence against migrants at external borders (see EUROPE 12942/1).
